GO! Check out Global Warming in London!

February 10th, 2008 by arvind

time for a picnic in the park!

Arvind here fresh from basking in the sunshine in Regents Park, London and topping up my suntan :-)

It is supposed to be winter here in London but as these images show, it feels like Spring already!

Is this yet another sign of global warming?

However with such sunny days, should we even complain? Or should we be really, really concerned?!

And what’s the “global warming” weather like where you are?

check out the blue skies

Nice pics. This could be global warming at work, but I’ve also heard that climates all over the world are shifting too. It could just be that from here on out Britain is going to be a much warmer, sunnier place to live. In ohio, our winters have been just a wee bit milder lately too, but I know some places like the mideast and Asia are seeing record lows in temperature.

It would be great if Britain was to have a warmed climate.

With my Indian origin and being born in Kenya, I will accept a warm sunny day anytime :-)

A warmer Ohio almost makes Ohio sound welcoming. Isn’t that where a lot of potatos are grown?!

Happy days in the sun Arvind! Tell us you’re not just oggling the suntanned babes in the park mate, but also walking barefoot and listening to the birds singing - there are birds right?

Hi Arvind

Yep fine and sunny in derbyshire. We paid a visit to Markeaton Park in Derby and it was no coat required! In fact most of the kids were in t-shirts (bit too chilly for that i’d say).

Anyway makes a change from the rain and cold dark nights we’ve had - my car had its first wash in months. It’s a sporty red colour but I hadn’t realised just how black it really was.

There were some kids in Regents Park in t-shirt - and some babes sunbathing :-)

It really felt like summer already with all these groups of picnickers (is there such a word?).

Gorgeous day in Dorset too after a very frosty start this morning.

The beach was packed….

Downside is, the sunshine shows up the cobwebs and dirty windows…..

Tis the other end of the spectrum here in Dubai Arvind and lol topping up your suntan!

The coldest and wettest winter fir many years and we loved it here! Did you know it snowed in the Oman mountains last week, it dipped below 0 deg C in Al Ain, near Dubai and Saudi witnessed snow.

Could this be the build up to 2012, when some predict our North n south poles will reverse. GO! Smell the mayan calender!

Brrrrrr cold or Bwwaaaa aaa aaa - evil laugh.

the Magnetic North Pole has shifted slightly south over the past decade JIM and EM…
It is presently somewhere between Iceland and Norway I think but around there. The effect on the Earth is to give us some of the Earthquake and Volcanic activity we have been seeing… thats my understanding…. but the Poles do switch over time…. and the effects can be quite interesting to say the least, going off some of the information around… they have comfirmed this through various geological surveys and alike.
You can find on Google Earth and if you want I will find the link if I can remember which one…..

I was just about to post that it’s freezing in Bombay. People are wearing boots and coats! Was 6 centigrade yesterday!

In the mountains in Kashmir, apparently the entire population of Pashmina goats may get wiped out because its gone so cold that the ground is frozen and they haven’t been able to eat. The airforce is dropping fodder for them starting today ! No more “cashmere” wool !

That’s sad, poor little goatie’s suffering from global warming, what are their migration options?

Comment by RYK
2008-02-11 01:29:39

not sure, its a goat that lives in the Himalayas at high altitudes and because of that it’s wool is very warm, thus cashmere is very warm. I’m not sure if they are migratory, else they should have come down to the valley prior to winter right?

Are the goats Indian or Pakistani :-)

Which country’s airforce is dropping them fodder?

I don’t think it’s global warming and as much as it pains me, Bo is right, it will be snowing next month.

I bet if you look at past met (can’t spell the rest) records, it’s not actually that unusual to have a freak warm spell in Feb.

Well we went to Whipsnade zoo for the day in glorious sunshine and sat outside to each lunch. They even got a tropical bird out in the bird display it was so hot.

And best of all, I got to eat ice-cream. Yeah.

The funny thing with global Warming (and i am not doubting it) is that it is natural part of the earths history.
the earth heats and cools periodically over millienium… the part that has science worried is the speed at which the warming has accured…
CO2 levels are almost at the point they were when the dinosaurs were around which gave the planet rainforest cover no Ice at the poles they were infact covered with rainforest, a few hundred years ago Greenland was farmland ask the vikings, and few thousand years ago Saudi Arabia was once a lush Rainforest covered area with abundant fish and sea life in lakes and rivers, these periodic warming and cooling are naturally accuring.
Our part with in the warming cycle has been to contribute alot of the CO2 levels to this point, however there is interest in other aspects of the human involvement CO2 being only part of it….
there has been recent speculation on the use of atmospheric heating such as nuclear testing which heats the atmosphere to huge temperatures as also playing its part is the steam from various forms of Power generators and the accumilating effects of other heat producing items sich as the simple light bulb….
the arguement as to what do about it, past us by long ago and as for fixing Global Warming that ship sailed as we have never been able to fix it, it was going to happen anyway what we should be doing is trying to minimise our effect with in it and learn to live with the changes that will happen. Sea Levels will rise, the ice caps will thaw and temperatures will rise, these are set in stone or history, we need to adapt to these changes as they will be slow by Earth History standards. people are afraid of change and since this change is new to us and we have no real memory of such events it scares us most….
the storms and droughts which we are and will continue to experience is the environments way of correcting problems. so we must learn to live with it and stop building our homes in areas affected by such things….

I think you are drawing too many conclusions from the changing wind patterns.
Right now we’ve had a fairly harsh winter, -24C daytime, -30C night time was normal for 2 months. Right now its about average at -13C day time and -23C night time. Central and Southern China had some large snow falls earlier this month but the main issue they had is they aren’t used to it and the it happened at the time of the biggest movement of humans on the planet.
Forget the Haj, forget kumba meila Chinese new year dwarfs them all.
The reason for this was wind sweeping down from Urumqi and Tibet.

The reason for England’s warmer weather was the same, wind direction.
True the winds may be changing due to global warming but I also think there is a lot more reporting of freak weather than there used to be and people are taking note of temperatures and conditions much more, although why we all think we’re qualified to make judgments on this and its causes is beyond me. If I asked you all to tell me the amount and type of boron needed in a Nuclear reactor control rod I doubt you’d offer up bar room science solutions yet when it comes to the weather and climate we’re all bloody geniuses - I think not.
Sure carry on trying to reduce our carbon footprint and increase renewables as it makes sense but as the phrase goes ‘one sunny day doesn’t make a summer’
