Go! Flu Season

October 3rd, 2007 by Jim

Cold season is starting up as fellow blogger over at Uppity Rib has let the world know on her blog.  She’s suffering from a menagerie of maladies.  Hopefully though our fellow flower smeller is soon on the mend.

Do you have any advice when it comes to getting better from a cold or minor illness?

Is that a photo of an overdosed beaver?

The old honey, whisky (excuse) remedy works for me and plenty of water. Stacking up on Vit C also helps, a couple of 1000 Mg every few hours keeps it at bay.

Poor beaver looks poorly to me! Why isn’t there a vaccine for flu yet guys? A healthy diet with echinacea drops do it for me to limit the damage!

Its due to the fact that the virus that causes the common cold and flu mutate all the time, as such a vaccine is very difficult to synthesise that will protect you from all of them. Although maybe the pharmacetical firms make too much money from cold and flu remedies - although this is just a theory and I have no proof.

The best cure by far is to drink lots of warm water, herbals teas and stay in bed for 2 to 3 days. You can also have hot lemon drinks with honey if you prefer. Have soups for food and nothing else heavy. Echinacea is good too.

Do NOT take any manmade medicines and just let your body’s immune system do the job for you.

This is a time honoured, guaranteed cure.

Most of us have trained our bodies to expect man-made medicines and it is time to let our bodies natural protection systems recover.

I am NOT looking forward to cold and flu season. I try to make sure I do not touch my face AT ALL. I use hand sanitizer liberally.

But usually my 2-year-old sneezes directly into my nose and face, so my efforts tend to be for naught.

I have also used Zicam tablets cherry flavor with success. They’re usually found at any drug store.

Poor lady, you should probably expect to catch colds and illnesses from your kid about 6 or 7 times a year until he or she is through school. That’s the average anyway. It’s what happens when you pack hundreds or thousands of kids into one place everyday, flu spreads like crazy.

Arvind

echinacea is totally unproven.

I would opt for reiki healing myself its SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO effective and not just any quack can set themselves up as a healer.

Honest.

I would just keep the fluids going in and let your bodies immune system sort it out.

Gary,

I tried Echinacea last year and it helped me through a cold.

I highly recommend Reiki too :-)

But any quack CAN set themselves up after just a weekends training.

Lie in bed under a chandelier of healing crystals smoking a large reefer of Echinacea whilst shoving a tube up your rear end and washing 10kg of undigested meat out of your colon with a mixture of wheatgrass, carrot juice and coffee.
Once cleansed you should have at least 23 sessions of alternative healing consisting of ayurverdic therapy, reiki, magnet therapy and coning. If you?re feeling really adventurous you could also drink your own piss.

I’ve heard a lot of people go by that healthy colonic stuff. Anyone seen the supposed illustrations floating around of what an average unhealthy colon looks like yet? It could really scare you into a high fiber diet.

I’m very sorry for Uppity Rib I hope she feel better very soon…

It’s very important to take vitamins and if you catch a cold start taking immediately Zinc it will help you tremendously…extra vitamin C and Echinacea are very good too…

Wash your hands a lot and try not to touch your eyes;)

Let’s keep it healthy folks!!!

I love the pic of the bear or whatever animal it is…too darn funny. I’m being very honest when I say that at most i get sick once per year with the flu, if even that. But as soon as I start to feel sick UI do what my body is asking me to…stop…relax….rest….and get better.

I am a proponent of Zinc. Studies have shown that if you take one Zinc lozenge hourly throughout the course of your cold you’ll get better like a day or two faster on average. Doesn’t seem like a lot of time but when you fee like crap its important.

The zinc was a new one on me, can’t we just get that from the likes of spinach in our diet?

Sorry, I meant ‘feel’ like crap, not ‘fee’ like crap. That’s an entirely different connotation. : )

Garlic Soup. It’s powerful. Better than chicken soup and yummy. Garlic is touted to have natural antibiotic properties.

There are an awful lot of recipes. Just type it in your browser and pick the one you want.

I have a theory though…if the media would quit telling us we’re going to get seasonally sick, I wonder if we’d all be a bit better off.

You know, that mind body connection?

To alleviate the symptoms is as much as you can hope for.
I personally like to chop a load of ginger into beef consome and let it boil for an hour or so. After that I tend to go for a mighty strong Sechuan hot pot with extra chilli (if that is possible given its virtually 100% chilli to start with). This then clears the nose, sinuses and later on your entire intestinal tract.

Of course you could just get on with your life and stop be a self pitying, whining bag of wind - its a sodding cold for gods sake.

I had dysentery once after a two day trip to Pakistan. It was suggested to me by a seasoned traveller that i eat the hottest chilli’s i cound stand. It worked.
Maybe i should start up a new business distributing chillis in some glossy ‘organic’ packaging and set it up as a new alternative therapy….it probably wouldn’t fly though as i know there’s been some scientific research which show that it works

Why bother with Zinc lozenges? Get a dozen Oysters down your neck and before long any symptoms of cold will have disappeared and you’ll be jumping on your partner

I’ll do that with you- I’ll get a load of scotch bonnets from the turks in Catford and we can repackage them as

‘Gary’s life-force wonder peppers- putting the chi back in chilli’s’

We could put some bollocks about ‘upto 80%’ of the profits will go to set up a school in India.

I have however finally found some crystals that have actually been proven to give the user greater energy- they are called ‘crystal meth’.

This can all be read about in my soon to be published book- ‘love thyself- everyone else thinks you are a James Hunt’- to be published by Chakra Books (Catford Limited).

Don’t forget that a man cold is far worse than a woman cold. The remedies should be tailored accordingly.

I love the photo - you have captured me utterly!

I am happy to report I’m finally recovering, though I’ve got a ways to go yet. Thank you for visiting the Rib and for everyone’s treatment suggestions - though I must say some of these cures are worse than the disease… Oh well, it’s the thought that counts.
