GO! Smell the spinning skyscraper, Dubai!
June 29th, 2008 by Jim & EmThanks to O’DB in Manchester, England for sending GO! Smell the flowers this BBC news link announcing another world first from Dubai - a building that NEVER looks the same!
This shape-shifting skyscraper may someday energize the Dubai skyline with its revolving floors and environmentally friendly, electricity-generating wind turbines. The Dynamic Tower design is made up of 80 pre-fabricated apartments which will spin independently of one another.
“It’s the first building that rotates, moves, and changes shape,” said Italian architect David Fisher. “This building never looks the same, not once in a lifetime,” he added. Pretty much like us humans then?
The 420-metre (1,378-foot) building’s apartments would spin a full 360 degrees, at voice command, around a central column by means of 79 giant power-generating wind turbines located between each floor. The skyscraper will cost an estimated $700m to build and should be up and running in Dubai in 2010.
No site has been finalised for this project or any of the project team so how they’re going to close our by 2010 amazes us, even by fast-track 24×7 construction, Dubai style where 28% of all construction cranes now exist.
Comments on this twisty-turny idea are most welcomed! Will they REALLY pull it off. Shape shifters anyone?

oh just great - when i’d previously harboured hopes of beating my fear of heights (some chance!) they throw in a spinning sensation.
Just better have steve mcqueen on standby and if you get in the lift and there’s a nun, a sick child, a donkey and leslie nielson already in - pass and take the next one.
Good grief… do you think we’re really capable of pulling off such a feat?

I think they can pull it off, but at what cost…what will the pitfalls be in attaining this goal. It looks absolutely fantastic and I love the idea!! Wow!!

that is just amazing…
but I would hate to work in there… motion sickness..
I wonder what is the purpose of building that kind of building?

It all adds to ‘brand Dubai’ establishing its name all over the world - BUT it could be going too far!
Maybe only 1 (B) is allowed if you go into the finished product of a spinning building!
Wow, they can go wild and crazy about these stuff huh..
Probably they don’t allow alcoholic drinks at all to avoid any vomit and headache..

This building is awesome. I would love to watch from the outside not in.
I think if I hold office in a rotating shape shifting building my head would be spinning too.
Awesome idea, the burj is cool, this one is cooler!

Pretty amazing building. I wouldn’t want to work in it.
Looks like the greatest Lego set ever created. Can’t wait to see if this becomes a standard.
Now that would be something!
A few times I’ve woken up and not known where I am but this would take it to a whole new level.
This is fascinating. Dubai has so many unbelievable sites - probably because of the amount of money they have. I wouldn’t mind visiting and seeing some of these!
Nothing surprises me about Dubai anymore, GSF. Your pre-cut, specifically shaped islands, particularly, leave me speachless. What gripes me is that we have all the same wealth and nataural resources here, in the U.S. of A. But, it is politically incorrect to use them.
Hence, even though oil is used in everything from ceramics down to the several gallons it takes to make a single car tire, we beat the drum against that great villian, oil, the scourge of mankind. Frustrating!

I just wonder how the fire evacuation plan works since the lifts and staircases are likely to be congregated in the centre.

Like any skyscraper….
Its a long way down - maybe a firemans pole?
I’ve been following this cutting edge (turning edge??) project for a little while. I’m not sure how they manage utilities and vertical transportation - but the basic idea is appealing.
Thanks for the video.
