GO! Smell the longest day in the U.K!
June 21st, 2008 by Jim & EmDruids, Pagans & flower smellers - today is the summer solstice in the U.K marking the first day of summer. Even google recognise this today!
It looks like Stonehenge is the place to be which is still shrouded in mystery as to how and why this place was constructed. Any thoughts?
Plenty of people are expected to see the sun & moon in action down at Stonehenge as they gather for an annual group hug:
Do you believe Where would you like to see the sunrise and set given the choice?
Do tell - Anywhere in the world!

your longest day our shortest…
the sun came up 7.37am and was gone by 5.15pm
I have seen the sun rise over the Pacific Ocean and the sun set over the Southern Ocean..
and I am happy
I have also seen the Moon rise over the Pacific and would love to see it set over the Southern.. thats next I think…
I do love the these festivals…

A 360 view always helps! Cheers ac….
My guess is that it has to do with seasons, time or something scientific. Isn’t the summer and winter solstis (?) the only time that it is open throughout the day/evening to visitors? I’ve seen it and it is facinating.

You’ve done the Stonehenge thing, Clinically? It’s on our list of things to do!
Do tell us more…
It is facinating up close. It was too bad the barriers didn’t allow for you to go closer. But, they are really tall and the structure is big which I don’t get from pictures. I wonder how did ancient cultures make such marvelous, sturdy structures with all the scientific stuff incorporated and modern culture can’t seem to duplicate such a thing. Anyway, if it is on your list, I highly recommends it. Then, again it is just a bunch of stones in a circle.

Nice Mike - We’d recommend Sandy Lane* with 18 holes at the Monkey Club in between times - dinner at the cliff*.
*Both silly prices - Jim went with a pal who won flights and Hotel in a contest once.
Gee, I didn’t notice any changes here at all..

Its the UK summer so technically the longests day - i.e with the most daylight!
Dubai, for example is light from 5am until 7pm - is never light after 7pm in Dubai all year round but in the UK its light till 10.30pm when its the longest day - assuming it’s not raining of course
Until 10.30pm? Wow, amazing..for the whole summer?

So is the UK the only place with such a late sunset?
I spent the sunset yesterday walking along the Thames to the Houses of Parliament and then listening to Big Ben strike at 10pm.
Its not very loud you know, I was quite disappointed.
No, I don’t remember where, but there is never nightfall. My brain is tired of all the bickering.

It’s always overcast and raining/windy typically in the UK so we don’t really see any difference.
There was a guy came up with a new theory on how the stones were raised… and set about building a scale model - I’m sure I’ve seen it on the web/tv somewhere. He reckons there are tiny holes/grooves (if memory serves) that prove his theory.
Has anyone seen the Quatermass series that starred Sir John Mills - great series - a bit depressive on the future of our civilisation and the way it was heading but the stone circles were an awesome storyline.
Gathering places for a alien beam to come down and take large gatherings of people - as Q’ put it - the human race is being harvested.
