Go! Entertain the kids

June 15th, 2008 by angryfromellesmereport

I took the kids and Mrs AEP to see a dolphin (and seal) show in Dubai at the weekend. We loved it, and the dolphins clearly enjoyed performing. Not only did the kids have a whale of a time but the trainers explained the educational and conservation benefits as well. What’s the problem with animals in captivity?

Go! Out this summer and take the kids to a zoo, safari park, aquarium etc

Always love going to zoo but zoo in Malaysia is never up to the standard of what Steve Irwin has achieved in Oz..Would like to visit his legacy someday..

I actually have no problems with zoos etc… as long the animals/critters are looked after and have a great habitat… its fine…
These days they are a far cry from what they were when we where growing up hey Angry… check out Toronga Park Zoo Web site and you’ll see the changes they have made.. very impressive…
I love zoos and can wonder for hours and hours….
Western Plain Zoo in Dubbo has no cages as such just a big fence and the humans are caged in their cars.. also on the web…

AngryfromEllesmerePort Says:

I’ve been to Toronga zoo a couple of times but the best is Singapore Zoo - do the night Safari - excellent

I have traveled the entire east coast of Oz except upwards towards Townsville…
If you come down this way you will have to drop me aline and perhaps we can met up…

Gareth in Thailand Says:

Having just moved to a ‘zoo’ I am disappointed that most of the exhibits are red faced old Western guys with bad tattoos and a teenage Thai girl as their handler.
Funny to watch many on the ‘walk of shame’ as I leave for work at about 6.15am.

LOL Gareth…

Angry - which Dolphin show was it? There was big controversy regarding the Palm Island / Atlantis Dolphins with questions regarding moving the finned creatures out of their natural habitat to dusty Dubai. Glad they looked like they’d settled in!

Zoo wise - Dubai zoo is a no-no - the animals aren’t looked after at all whereas the likes of Chester Zoo and Bronz zoo seem to cater more for their natural habitat….

What’s that flipper?*

Dubai Dolphinarium in Creek Park. Apparently the dolphins there are imported from Russia and have been captivity bred. The ones at Atlantis are supposed to have been captured in the wild
Still the Atlantis hotel has a deal for a soft opening so we may get to see more dolphins and try out the water slide that goes under an aquarium with sharks
Chester Zoo - ‘catering more for their natural habitat’ !! - last time i was in Chester i don’t remember seeing monkeys swinging through the South American rainforests or herds of wildebeast roaming majestically across the plains
I seem to recall it was full of local wildlife kicking the SH one T out of blue nosed scouse scally’s

Our best dolphin memory is spotting a pink one in the Amazon near Peru and no it wasnt in a tin!

Lib Says:

Is this tongue in cheek?

I thought you were against animals in captivity because of a bad experience at a zoo?

AngryfromEllesmerePort Says:

I don’t recall mentioning a bad experience.
Well spotted Lib, I hoped to smoke a few hand knitted woolly jumper wearing types out - i should have known they’ve all left in a flood of tears and stamping of feet
We did go and see the dolphins and the kids loved them - if i had enough cash i’d build a pool and have a couple in the back garden

I don’t have a problem as long as they are healthy and happy. I think that there are some benefits, but many smaller zoo and such need to go!!!

See lots of Dolphins in the wild carrying people about on their backs and wearing nose collars. Do they / don’t they enjoy it? It’s only one up from keeping chickens and robbing them of their eggs isn’t it??

I’m with the general consensus here that as long as they are looked after, then it isn’t a problem. However, you do see horrific stories in the media - we saw one a while ago - bears caged up and quite mad. Shocking.

They should have let the bears out - i’m sure they were desperate to dance

Where’s UP?

Urban Pagan Says:

bottom line is animals are safer and likely to live longer in captivity- in the wild they rip each other to shreds

what winds me up about zos is when the animals make little or no effort
with the exception being the chimps- you can always guarantee they’ll fling a bit of cack or partake in a ‘monkeys fag break’ in front of coach loads of kids

the ones that just walk round in circles should be put down

bst zoos for me

barca

and bronx

amazing facilities

all they lack are dancing bears- and anyone who doesn’t enjoy them is nuts.
