GO! Watch general abuse….

June 11th, 2008 by Jim

Hi from Dubai folks after an 8 hour delay at Toronto airport we took deep breaths, checked our luggage in and headed off to explore downtown Toronto. With a 14 hour flight ahead of us we both folded like cheap suits and knocked back Canada’s infamous coffee - Tim Horton’s - like it was going out of fashion. From de-tox in Thailand to re-tox in Canada!

Others must have done the same plus e-numbers as when we returned some of the rapid fire abuse the poor airline staff were getting at check-in was jaw dropping. We sat back and watched as insults where exchanged between fuming passengers and the team that was only doing their jobs and apologizing through understandably gritted teeth.

Rather than step in and try and save the day we thanked the staff for doing a great job and understood what pressure they must have been under explaining the reasons for the delay (Emergency maintenance work in London - Gulp) that was out of their control.

So, two questions for you to ponder and reply to:

1) What would you have done during an 8 hour delay in a major City with only hand luggage to hand?

2) Would you have stepped in to stop the insults to the airline crew - assuming you wouldn’t opt to complain yourself, of course.

We’d love to read your comments on this one and please, 25 words per person is your maximum word limit permitted on this post and anything that is fluid and over 100ml has to be displayed in a clear plastic bagĀ  :-)

Crossword puzzles, wander, sleep, music, journal, talk with husband, handheld games, read, mini board games.

Do the same as you did.

Stop by the visitors section and rental car place and the gift store and pick up a map. I’m good at getting oriented in a new place quickly as long as I have a map. I want to try the food and SHOP! Hmmm…I don’t speak any other languages. Do you? We’d figure it out. We are both smart ladies!!! Especially, if there is shopping involved we’d figure it out. Ask some workers where they like to eat…locals have better information than the tourist places. Let’s go!

When waiting patiently in a que behind an irate/abusive person taking it out on a poor assistant - i usually catch their eye and give them a friendly smile of encouragement.

These days it doesn’t pay to step in and say something - at least not when i’m with others but if i’m on my own i can;t contain myself sometimes.

Restaurants winds me up the most - loud boring people moaning about service or waiting - i’ve worked in some fine kitchens in my younger days and i know that they’re going flat out to produce a great meal so i sit even more patiently - have a drink - smile and look happy.

I get better service and a better meal.

Explore the city!! Even if I had been there before, there is always something that you wish you’d have done.

Failing that, get absolutely rat arsed.

Regarding the customer service - the bottom line is, if the people who are on the ‘frontline’ are not responsible for the initial problem, how on earth can they be blamed?

If however the people on the frontline exacerbate the situation by providing bad customer service, shout all you want. They should be fully trained to deal with these situations and if they can’t ‘handle’ it, they must fully expect people to get annoyed.

I do think that people get annoyed way to easily nowadays though.

Read, talk on phone and just people watch.

I have learned that it is not my job to try and get other people to stop acting like the asses they can be, I have worked on many “other” sides of the counter dealing with the general public and I know more then anyone else, people tend to want to blame someone for things outside their control…so the easiest person is the one that faces the public…As for me when I’ on the other side, I just try and do my part to be understanding and show my gratitude for the help they offer…it’s not an easy job, they need all the praise they can get.
