Heh you tell us what you think about Mary Whitehouse

Mike here,

animals.jpg

Hey you, Whitehouse, ha ha charade you are.
You house proud town mouse, ha ha charade you are.
You’re trying to keep our feelings off the street,
you’re nearly a real treat, all tight lips and cold feet,
and do you feel abused?

You gotta stem the evil tide,
and keep it all on the inside.
Mary, you’re nearly a treat, Mary, you’re nearly a treat,
but you’re really a cry.

Lyrics and image from Pink Floyd’s Animals

Julie Walters recently portrayed Mary Whitehouse on the BBC - What do you make of Mary Whitehouse and those like her? Where her motives right? Did she damage society or help it? And for fun, who would you choose to play her that would go against type? Jessica Alba? Dawn French? Do add your own!

LOL Mike, it looks like I am the first one here and I had never heard of Mary Whitehouse before you introduced her here!

I did manage to scan the wiki on MW and from what I read, Julie Walters portrayal was probably more believable than if Dawn French had portrayed her. I will be interested to see others comments and get up to speed with MW.

I like the Pink Floyd song too…. that pig looks so huge going up!

spider pig - spider pig - does whatever a spider can’t do….or something like that. We wpuldn’t have the Simpsons before the 10′oclock watershed if Mary had been on the case i tell you.

Loved Kenny Everetts take on mary with the city gent sketches.

I guess it comes down to the issue of agreeing with censorship or not.
On the one hand as an adult you should be able to choose what you see or what you don’t but on the other hand look at how certain sections of society are so strongly influenced by the media. Those guys that write into ‘points of view’ complaining about stuff do make me smile as they seem to have lost the will to turn over of turn off - they sit their and get ‘extremely disgusted’ but not disgusted enough to stop watching.
Personally I’m not that bothered as anything they ban can be seen via other routes anyway, plus it stops kids accessing it although these days they’re too busy getting drunk or stabbing each other.
However banning something does tend to make people more determined to watch it.

I always liked the logic that stated ‘watching porn turns men into rapists’ in that case surely the censors should be the first place the police look as they spend most of their lives watching jazz films and flicking through rhythm magazines.

As for who would play Mary then I think Sara Young or Lindsay Dawn Mckenzie.

she was probably a super-hero in disguise - nobody would have ever suspected she was a caped ‘crusader’ - lol

She was a bit before my time…..I had to google her to find out who she was……funny though I love this pig Floyd album as well as the song and never realized the song was about anyone in particular….
