Go! Break Your Fast
May 27th, 2008 by Funkygirl012003I just learned that an English breakfast features tomatoes, mushrooms and sometimes something called white or black pudding! We don’t eat a lot of tomatoes with breakfast in the states. Just about the only time you’ll see a tomato on the plate at 8 am is when it’s part of a western omelet.
White or Black Pudding is really intriguing. When I read ‘pudding’ I tend to think sweet, mushy dessert, but it’s actually a kind of meat and oatmeal sausage.
We have all kinds of breakfasts, but the standard is usually bacon, eggs, toast or cereal and coffee, tea or orange juice. What’s the standard fare to break your fast where you live?

I would use ‘meat’ very loosely Funky as it’s actually a blood sausage. Tasty!
You have no idea how much I want to tuck into that breakfast.
blood sausage??
made with blood…… and other bits yum yum…
I actual rather like it but hubby has banned it in this house and I am not allowed to buy it, cook it or attempted to make it…
I’ve always wanted to try blood sausage. We have a store that imports different foods. Maybe I’ll ask them if they have it.
Do it Empress, you will not be disappointed.
Just don’t read whats in it.
looks delicious..yummy..I am hungry already..
Hello Funkygirl.
The main ingredient of a British breakfast is a liberal coating of grease from various animals
Uncanny…I just made an unusual breakfast for myself, to say the least….wish I could have been bothered to take a snap! It was a poached omelette consisting of chopped mushroom/tomatoes/mint/parsley with cumin/salt/black pepper. On the side was warm chick peas. How unique is that lool!
I love German breakfast…my version is rollmops with black rye bread. Yum!
On other days I love smoked salmon with anything. Tomatoes, perhaps. Eggs Benedict is always a winner.
I can’t wait for lunch - can you tell?
Don’t forget potato cakes and some bubble and squeak.
bubble and squeak??
GIC is your Bubble and Squeak left over mash. and veges, coated in bread crumbs and fried in animal fat….
yummy…
I live in California, USA. For me standard breakfast is coffee!!! Sometimes, with English muffin and orange juice. If I go out, coffee, oj, pancakes no butter, plain w/ a smidge of syrup or just fresh fruit.
Mmmmmmm,pancakes and maple syrup!!!
Real maple…Grade B, not A. B is richer in flavor!!!
Breaky here

coffee and a smoke…..
morning tea
coffee and a smoke
lunch
two coffees and 3 smokes…
nothing like a varied diet….
smoke for me means sheesha (hubbly bubbly) and a nice German coffee brew with a cinnamon twig (for a personal touch)…tea is Twining’s English Breakfast.
nothing like Western tea/coffee with a regional smoke outlet
My father has always been a great believer in having a huge breakfast. So, On the occasion that I DO eat breakfast, it usually includes the works:
Bacon or Ham
Over-easy Eggs
Grits with Salt and Butter (Sweet Grits are YUCKY!) Bust the eggs or the grits and mix…YUMMY!
Buttermilk Biscuits
Hash Browns
Juice
Mange!
Hey Empress,on my trips to the states,i’ve always indulged in the steak n eggs. I know what you mean about the sweet grits, yeuuuch!
Black Pudding / White Pudding - I am told it usually contains the worst offal bits from a carcass. Enjoy
Being a vegetarian, I usually have cereal, fruit and herbal tea.
That breakfast has “explosive diarrhea” written all over it.
Lovely image…thank you!!!
The best variation of a typical english breakfast i’ve ever had consisted of bacon, sausage, black pudding, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, hash browns, fried egg, bubble and squeak and a burger, toast and a mug of tea! I held back on the fried bread, its bad for you.
McD in the West does a nice break-fast…who knows what goes in those hash browns but it’s a nice, fatty fry-up
My brother and father are big fans of the whole “blood pudding” thing…for me though a resounding “NO THANKS!” But for tomato’s I lvoe them with egg whites and swiss….mmmmmmmmm…..yummy
Great post btw…
Tomorrow’s breakfast is going to be tonight’s uneaten take-out, consisting of some kind of greasy chicken wings and chicken/meat kebab with fries, and humus as a dip.
