Go! Tell a Story
April 9th, 2008 by LibChris is married to Pat who works very hard. Chris feels neglected and lonely. When Pat goes off on yet another business trip, Chris happens to meet the attractive Lee. Lee invites Chris home where they spend the night together. Chris leaves in the morning knowing that Pat will soon be back.
Alas! The bridge over the river (could be the Kwai) which Chris has to cross to get home is blocked by a madman who kills everyone that comes near him. Chris follows the river and meets the ferrywoman who demands 100 euros for the trip across the river. Chris has no money and goes back to Lee and asks to borrow 100 euros. Lee refuses to help. Chris remembers and old plutonic friend who lives near by and goes and explains the situation. The friend refuses to help: Chris’s conduct has caused disillusion.
Chris’s only choice is to try the bridge in spite of the danger. Chris does this and is killed by the madman.
So who’s to blame then?
In what order (1 = most to blame, 6 = least to blame) do you hold the characters (Chris, Pat, Lee, madman, ferrywoman, friend) responsible for the tragedy?
And your reasons perlease.

From order of most blame to least:
Chris, Pat, Lee, friend, ferryman, madman
Interesting to see what other people think about this.
Welcome Asithi!
Ok - from most to blame to the least to blame for Chris’s death:-
1. Chris - he brought it all onto himself. He shouldn’t have been cheating on Pat and he should have been carrying 100 euros.
2. Lee - having had her wicked way with Chris, she could have lent him the 100 euros
3. Friend - if you can’t rely on your friends to lend you 100 euros in your time of desperate need, then who can you rely on? The friend shouldn’t have been disillusioned with Chris’s conduct and brought his own judgement in.
4. Ferrywoman - should have helped out a man in need
5. Madman - his madness makes him almost blame free. Why go near a killer madman?
6. Pat - why blame her - she is only working hard and following her chosen career. Chris should have been proud of her and found ways to feel less neglected and lonely within their marriage.
So now to see what everyone else thinks

Madman blame free Arvind? What if he wasn’t mad and just fancied chopping a few people up?
Just like normal not mad people often do.

Oi! Go and pick on someone elses post!
U tell em Lib
my thought
1… Pat she should have been more aware of the situation and neglect her hubby was feeling, if they had of spoken to each other none of this of happened…
joint to blame…
1.. Chris… idiot… a guy with a gun of bridge and you go walk across… are you sure it wasnt suicide.. after all he had just had an affair, had his friends desert him, and was in a big pickle….
3… nutter on the bridge…. what was he doing there in the first place….. if your going to stand on a bridge with a gun threaten people you are going to hurt someone …
4… Lee for having the affair with a married man and then washing her hands of him.. what a cow…
5… the last friend who refused to help.. true friends simple dont do that… therefore was just a user… and not a real friend
6… ferryman its his job and should have been aware of hte situation on the bridge and provided a public service
I throw in one more….
7.. the Government and Police… tighter gun laws would have possibly prevented the man obtaining the gun in the first place and if the police had of the situation more seriously he may have been arrested long before Chris arrived on the scene…

What gun? Didn’t mention guns. Earlier on in the posts it was knives.
Are we to assume this nutter shoots them and then chops them up, overkill surely.
I’m still trying to figure out if Pat is the guy or the girl and what gender Chris is too? Ironically, Pat, Chris and Lee are all gender neutral names over here. So they could be given to a guy or a girl.
As for the tragedy, it depends on what you are defining as the tragedy; the murder of Chris, the refusal to aid a friend or the adultery.
Using my own twisted reasoning to assume the tragedy is the murder, here’s my order of who is most to blame:
1. MadMan: he welded the knife and killed for really no good reason.
2. Lee: not only did he/she do the dirty with a married he/she, lee also refused to aid Chris in time of great danger
3. Chris: Stupid idiot walked right into a death trap and cheated on lover when really could have just talked with Pat about being lonely.
4. Friend: New Chris was in trouble and refused aid
5. Ferrywoman: May or may not have known about the madman, still taking advantage by charging 100 euros for freaking ferry ride.
6. Pat: worked long hours yes, neglected yes, but didn’t know how Chris was truly feeling and certainly had no idea about the trouble Chris was in.
Do you think the gender matters Funky?
A fair point Lib…
I thought the gender neutral names indicated perhaps this was some sort of trick question kind of story that revealed our true opinions about certain gender roles, so I pointed it out.
On a side note, Gender would probably influence who we all thought was to blame. At the moment everyone seems to say ‘Chris’ is most to blame and I can’t help but notice that ‘Chris’ is the more masculine of the three names in the story.

I think Chris is to blame but it isn’t a masculine figure I have in my head. It’s the actions rather than the person.
I just do not see how the madman can be blamed for Chris’s death. After all, he was only trying to kill himself and not have a shooting rampage. If Chris was so stupid to be close to him, then that is Chris’ fault for being an idiot.
Who said he was out to kill just himself?
There’s nothing about the madman trying to kill himself. Plus, it does specifically state ‘madman’ as in wild and crazy.

Is this set in Sellafield, Chernobyl, a planetarium or Disneyworld - they’re the only place I can think of where you’d have ‘Plutonic’ friends. Unless of course they are friends who share the a rock collecting hobby specialising in rare forms of granite. (sorry Lib, uncalled for I know but had to be done).
As for the poeple.
1. Chris - ultimately, whatever the reasons or outside influences YOU are responsible for your own actions.
2. The best friend - what a tight arse - some friend.
3. PAT - should have made sure hubby wasn’t skint or left horny.
4. Lee - could have sorted out a loan or got Chirs back into bed for another bunk up.
5. Nutter - why can’t loonies simply pretend with rubber knives and ketchup.
6. Ferrywoman - doesn’t know Chris or owe anything to Chris, the ferrywoman has a small business and needs to make a living.

Hahahaha! I didn’t even realise! I was v tired when I wrote this. Honest guv.
Would be surprised if was it the bridge over the River Kwai if Euros are the demanded currency.
And there was me thinking it was a true story.
Well maybe you weren’t so naive afterall, let’s face it with the dollar on its arse Euros might well be the preferred international currency today.
Here are my answers
1) Chris
2) Axeman
3) Lee
4) Old friend
5) Pat
6) Ferrywoman
The post is about discrimination and it was only Funky that picked up on the gender issue. Obviously the names are non-gender specific so your assumptions should be based on events and not neccessarily those involved.
There is no right or wrong answers but ultimately as GIC pointed out Chris is to blame for his own actions but the madman comes in at a pretty close second, if he wasn’t there then poor ickle Chris wouldn’t be dead.
Good to see none of you are discriminatory. That or you are all exceptionally polite.
Woohoo! I was right.
So what answers would have indicated someone being discrimatory though?
funkygirl012003’s last blog post..Informercials and Advertising yourself
It’s not actually the answers that are indicative of the discrimination but the discussion leading up to them, and you were the only one that mentioned gender….
I’m not saying anything!!!
A clever post thought nonetheless,
Love
WRONG
the madman is not to blame
why?
because he was actually ridding his country of infidel crusaders and by putting them on a video in a jumpsuit he taught the world that allah was happy.
and so spake the prophet ‘inshallah it is right to kill anybody in the name of our backward mentalism- now wheres the nearest 9 year old- daddy wants some fun.’
OUCH!
