Go! Help the Gurkhas get Equal Rights!
March 19th, 2008 by arvindArvind here with a story about Gurkhas in the British army being denied equal rights.
Hundreds of retired Gurkhas are today protesting outside the British parliament buildings to demand equal rights and to remain in the UK.
Gurkhas who retired after 1997 can automatically stay in the UK, but those who retired earlier must apply- and they are mostly being turned down. They are also not being granted the same level of pension payments as their non-Gurkha, white counterparts in the British Army.
Having been globally acknowlwedged as the bravest, most dedicated and loyal soldiers, is this fair?
In this day and age is their any room for such blatant inequality?

Another tough job taken for granted and put on the shelf…
Jim here and Gurkhas do have that harder than nails approach to life - always my choice when I played soldiers as a kid…machette and all - plastic one but imagination made it very sharp….
Here are more forgotten heroes…heroes in a half shell:

Given the stories I’ve heard about them, most substantiated by fact, these guys deserve to be given all the rights and benefits they are asking for, the shameful thing is most of our veterans and pensioners deserve much better.

the gurkhas should claim they are muslims fleeing persecution
they’d get a house, benefits and a self help adviser to help them through the welfare minefield.
its a disgrace it really is. b ut no surprise. the latest one is soldiers in I think colchester are being told not to wear military uniforms away from their base as it may offend foreign people. unbelievable.
You’re kidding - what next - banning the salvation Army from collecting change during last orders?
he he, this is very funny. Guilty conscience ?
Absolutely unfair. I was listening to the radio about it earlier, and it mentioned that some of these guys have put in 20 years of service! I think it’s despicable to treat them this way.

I believe the gurkas should have equal rights to UK forces personel. My father-in-law was in the Polish airforce. After he was shot down he came to England and joined the RAF. After the war (which he would not talk about) he was at the Polish hospital in Penley near Wrexham. He and his wife,a nursing sister were given a home on site.
The Gurkas deserve the same treatment
Agree, if they’ve fought for the good & true then they deserve all the benefits we can furnish them with. Such basic rights for ex-soldiers seems so obvious it’s stunning it even needs campaigning for.
It seems absurd to open our doors to criminals yet slam them closed in the face of the Gurkhas!
