Go! Drive your car!

Hi Diane here

It’s often said (but not by me) that men are better drivers than women. The image above is supposed to be what a car speedometer would look like if women ruled the world….

Do you agree with the stereotype? What car do you drive? Do you enjoy driving and are you good at it?

Let gender wars commence…

Jim & Em Says:

LOL with your Speedo wording Diane! Quality…

As Doo-bye ain’t the safest road wise we both drive Nissan XTrails.

Point of interest 1 in Dubai - only the locals can have their windescreens ‘blacked out’ totally where ex-pats are limited to 15%

What’s the reasoning behind that?

We may not want to know the reasoning behind that particular law…

Curious Says:

Security? or rather privacy for the local ladies?

And btw it’s 30%

Tint Man at large in the UK!

In the UK the windscreen must let 75% of the light through.
Otherwise it is a ?30.00 fine and an order off the road if you get caught with the Police’s Tint Man.

Very good - I love it!
The Cowardly Lion was my favourite though…

Mel Says:

Love it too! It gave me a real feeling of Christmas day in front of the fire!

Apart from Toto, who got my vote as best actor, I liked the scarecrow!

Thank you

Jim & Em Says:

As the men in the orthopaedic shoes said,

‘We stand corrected’ - We didn’t realise we could have 30% tint, thought that was just with sun glasses!

I think it is a local status thing (BJ / Flowers maybe able to answer this one) basically there are some perks that us Westerners cant enjoy that the locals do….

Maybe they dont trust us behind a bloack out windscreen?

I was told by an Arab pal that it’s because of the local women. They don’t always wear the shaila in the car I imagine.

I dunno about black windscreen being a perk.. looks creepy to me ha!

Gary Says:

Nissan X Trails Jim and Em?

Surely a Toyota Prius would be the green choice?

You’ll be driving hummers next!

And then I’ll be flashing their hummers out of my way on the fast lane ha! ;)

JJ Loch Says:

Can you change the dial to closing eyes at the beginning of the speedometer? ROFL!!! My husband insists of driving.

Hugs, JJ

My ex always used to drive too. Unless we were going out for the night and then it was miraculously always my turn….

I think my sons drive too fast - they say I drive too slowly :)

fab Says:

Great speedo Di, lol.

I dont drive at all - not for me as I prefer my private Chauffer (taxi cab)

Let me surprise everyone and say that this Bridget agrees that, generally speaking, men are better drivers than women (sorry girls.. it’s true!). Only this morning, a chick in a brand-new BMW thought it was absolutely okay to shift lanes in front of me when I was doing a U-turn.

Whenever I take a curve in the road, if there is a woman driving the car in the other lane, I either overtake her speedy gonzales-like, or I give her all the space she could possibly need.. in case she wants to tremble her way in the fast lane while taking the curve..

That being said, I’m regularly entertained on Dubai roads by bad male drivers too ha!

Bridget drives a French car (of course…), the fastest she’s driven in it is 170, and the fastest ever she’s flown is 220 in the ex’s porsche. Do I need to say she LOVES driving? HA! ;)

Lib Says:

I don’t think it’s the fact it was a woman driver BJ, I think it’s because it was a BMW driver.

Steady on! I drive a BMW….

I will confess to being rubbish at parallel parking though. I have been told that it’s because I have bad spatial awareness - I have no idea where the corners of my car are (if you see what I mean!) I always leave far too much space as I think the car is longer/wider than it actually is. Better than the other way round I guess :-)

Lib Says:

Well seeing as we are generalising massively on this post, I thought I would add one of my own.

In my experience, BMW drivers are (on the road at least) cocky, arrogant, discourteous and down right rubbish at driving.

I’m sure that you sre one of the few that aren’t Diane.

Thank you Lib!

I actually drive a BMW Z4 - a little roadster. It’s amazing how many guys want to race me away from the traffic lights or if I overtake them, almost kill themselves to get back in front.

Just an observation….

Mel Says:

I think it is probably more to do with a heavy dose of testosterone rather than the BMW!

Also add to that a hefty portion of ego and it is a recipe for disaster!

Lib Says:

See, now any further comments are just going to be construed as jealousy Diane, and quite rightly so.

It’s an interesting point though, as soon as there is a nice car at the traffic lights, it brings out this inate competition thing in men. It’s hilarious!

I find ‘white van man’ is often the worst culprit! What is it about driving a van that brings out the worst in men? Are there ‘white van women’?

U might just be right Lib!! Though BMWs are no big deal in Dubai, I dunno why she should bother with the attitude ha! ;)

Gary Says:

I don’t drive

but I am probably still better at it than women.

Girls - KNOW YOUR PLACE***

*** does not include ferrying me to and fro public house

arvind Says:

Women drivers are supposedly bad at judging distances, because they have told by many men that 2 inches is actually 7 inches!

Think about it….

AngryFromEllesmerePort Says:

Is this the same 2 inches you mentioned some time ago on the blog

Most of the men I know have had their share of accidents and tickets…as for being the better drivers I don’t know! I do know of other stereotypes that I absolutely believe in but I won’t start spreading that here :) As for the image you included I absolutely love it!
I also like Arvind’s perspective…ha ha ha

ausiecynic Says:

I now drive a toyota Cressida an old 1986 model,
I used to drive a nice little 2 door BMW, but well the roads around here are far to nice to drive at 60 km’s in a sports car….. better at 110km plus, unfortunately the roads in and out of town are mountains and is known as the 99 bends, yep 99 bends in 8 kms of road tight mountain turns and the Targa Rally car race comes through, thought I try my driving at it unfortunately it wasnt rally time and the Police man didn’t think I should be practicing out of race season….lol

WOW! 99 bends over 8 kms?! This Bridget is so going to Aussie’s place, forget the privacy paranoia ha! ;)

60 in a sports car? Gurl….

ausiecynic Says:

Hey Bridget…. check out http://www.discoverqueenstown.com it shows the mountains with the bends… on the targa rally link…. very cool
AC

Saw it Aussie, awesome! Thanks for sharing.

The car takes the bends a bit slowly though hum. Bridget would be thriling herself at a much higher speed ha! ;)

gareth in China Says:

It doesn’t matter in China, everyone drives badly, end of.

arvind Says:

Yes, and I am told that China is where all the men have to exaggerate and make out that 2 inches is actually 7.

AngryFromEllesmerePort Says:

Best time for a woman to drive, is late at night from the pub, after i’ve been drinking

Mel Says:

Didn’t Barbara Pease do a huge research into women and reversing. Conveniently, I can’t remember the outcome! Anyone else know?

Btw, I am a far better driver than my partner - he is just a maniac.

Diane Says: Subscribed to comments via email

I would love to hear about that research as I will admit I don’t like reversing at all…

Please tell us what you mean by ‘maniac’ driving Mel

Mel Says:

In this case ‘maniac’ means he thinks he is the only one on the road and all others should gt out of his way! He seems to be in such a hurry that safety is left behind in the parking lot!

If he changes lanes, he does it at 90 degree angle rather than a smooth transition - it is quite a ride!

Thanks for sharing Mel. A bit of a maniac indeed!! ;)

This Bridget must admit she is tempted to try the 90 degree angle lane changing.. ha! ;)
